Coastal plains and high seasonal water table

Arid and semi-arid Southwest

Southwest Tier A values illustrate wide spread on site-wide WQv depth (Nevada Las Vegas 0.37 inches; Arizona Flagstaff 1 inch; Texas Dallas 1.5 inches) and drawdown (Arizona Flagstaff 24 hours; Nevada Las Vegas 72 hours; New Mexico Albuquerque 96 hours). Stated design infiltration rates include 0.1 in/hr (Albuquerque GSI) versus 0.5 in/hr in several Texas and inland western entries. SHWT separation is commonly 24–36 inches where extracted. Bioretention-specific media and ponding depths are sparsely populated in these rows relative to eastern manuals; arid design discussions should not assume eastern 24-inch media / 12-inch ponding defaults without checking local Tier A text.

Karst and fractured-bedrock caution

The matrix contains limited karst-specific bioretention numerics. Texas Edwards RG-348 lists 48-inch SHWT separation alongside other Gulf/Southcentral siting values. Most other manuals do not isolate karst in extracted bioretention fields. Where karst applies, committees should treat SHWT separation and infiltration design rate (matrix range 0.01–2.41 in/hr for stated design rates) as site-verified inputs rather than inferring a national karst bioretention baseline from this Tier A pool.

Open issues
