Chapter 7 "Hydrology," discusses ODOT's practices with respect to hydrology. This section discusses the application of the hydrologic practices specifically to storm drainage systems.

Water quality volume method
No statewide water quality volume sizing in Chapter 10; OPDES-regulated systems may require urban BMPs per local ordinances and HEC-22 Chapter 10 guidance when directed by ODOT Environmental Programs Division.

ODOTs Environmental Programs Division will inform the designer if water quality practices are required, depending on local ordinances and regulations in specific project locations. HEC-22 (2), Chapter 10 provides an introduction to the types of BMPs that have been historically used to provide water quality benefits.

Peak flow calculation method(s)
Rational Method

The Rational Method is the most common method used for the design of storm drains when the peak-flow rate is desired. Its use should be limited to systems with drainage areas of 640 acres or less.

The reduction of peak flows can be achieved by the storage of runoff in detention basins, storm drainage pipes, swales and channels and other detention storage facilities.
